Mom Was Right …

Bowl of muesli with yoghurt strawberries and blueberries boiled egg orange juice croissant and coffee for healthy breakfastIt's 10:30 a.m., and you've just hit a wall. You worked hard all morning and now you've got nothing.  You can't think straight, your energy has tanked, and your only hope is a cup of coffee or an early lunch.

What happened?

Mom said it a thousand times: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. A good breakfast gets your metabolic fires going, sets the stage for all the other food choices you'll make for the day, and keeps your blood sugar and energy levels even.

So what's your usual breakfast? A cup of coffee gulped down on the go? A cup of sugary yogurt and a muffin eaten at your desk? Nothing at all?

My dear, your body deserves much better than that.

When you eat a good breakfast, your day goes more smoothly. No growling stomach, low blood sugar shakiness, or wandering attention to keep you from nailing the goals you've made for yourself.

What Breakfast is Best for You?

It might surprise you, but what makes a good breakfast can be different for everyone. The best way to find out which foods serve you best in the morning is to experiment. For one week, try eating a different breakfast each day.

Record in a notebook what you ate, how you felt right after the meal, and how you felt two hours later. Don't skip this step!

  • Day one: Toast and peanut butter
  • Day two: Scrambled eggs with cheese and spinach
  • Day three: Oatmeal
  • Day four: Granola and plain Greek yogurt
  • Day five: Muffin and coffee
  • Day six: Fresh fruit
  • Day seven: Green smoothie

Feel free to repeat the experiment for another seven days with different foods each morning. Try leftovers from the night before, scrambled organic tofu, bean soup, bagel with cream cheese, etc.

Which foods made you feel energized? Which ones didn't? After the experiment, try adding in more of the foods that made you feel great!
